Is LANAP® Right for You? What to Expect From the Procedure
If you’ve been diagnosed with moderate or severe gum disease, LANAP® offers an exciting alternative to traditional gum procedures. Discover what LANAP is, how it works, and who is a good candidate.

Nearly 42% of United States adults aged 30 and older have some type of periodontal disease — a condition that causes the gums to become inflamed and pull away from the teeth.

Mild gum disease often responds to improved oral hygiene and preventive care, but moderate to severe cases may require a different approach.

LANAP® offers an alternative that can help keep your gums healthy.

At Gulf Coast Periodontics & Implants, Dr. Caesar Sweidan and Dr. Cyrus Mansouri regularly use LANAP to manage gum disease and support patients’ smiles.

Understanding LANAP

The laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP) is a treatment for moderate to severe gum disease. It uses a specialized dental laser to treat infected gum tissue while preserving surrounding healthy tissue.

LANAP is more comfortable and effective than traditional gum disease procedures.

LANAP is FDA-cleared and offers excellent results. Studies show it reduces the risk of further infection, supports the body’s healing process, and helps gum tissue reattach to the teeth.

How to determine if you’re a candidate for LANAP

If you’ve been diagnosed with moderate to severe gum disease, you’re probably a good candidate for LANAP. That’s especially true if you have:

  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Observable gum recession
  • Loose teeth or changes in your bite
  • Deep periodontal pockets

Sometimes, we recommend LANAP to people who can’t undergo traditional periodontal maintenance procedures.

The LANAP procedure: What to expect

Laser therapy with the LANAP procedure typically involves two treatment sessions spaced about a week apart.

If we determine that you’re a candidate, we complete a comprehensive oral exam to assess your gum health, determine the severity of periodontal disease, and measure any existing periodontal pockets.

That information helps us program the laser’s settings so we can target the most infected areas and support healing.

Recovery after LANAP

After LANAP, it’s normal to experience mild gum sensitivity, but it should improve within a day or two. Taking over-the-counter (OTC) anti-inflammatory medication can help.

Continue brushing and flossing gently as your mouth heals. Some people choose to eat softer foods during recovery, but this varies from person to person.

About a week after each treatment session, you return to our office for a checkup. These appointments help us monitor your healing and long-term results.
