4 Ways to Prevent Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease affects millions of Americans. However, it isn’t inevitable. Discover four easy ways to prevent gum disease and keep your mouth healthy. Keep reading to learn more.

More than 47% of American adults 30 and older have periodontal disease (gum disease). The condition occurs when plaque collects on the teeth and inflames the gums, causing them to become swollen and painful.

Without prompt treatment, the inflammation can spread and make your gums pull away from your teeth. Over time, that increases the risk of tooth loss, bone damage, and other more serious oral health issues.

At Gulf Coast Periodontics & Implants, Dr. Caesar Sweidan and Dr. Laura Smith regularly treat periodontal disease. In this month’s blog, we highlight four effective ways to prevent gum disease, so you can protect your smile.

Tip #1: Maintain good oral hygiene

The most effective way to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily using a fluoride toothpaste, and floss regularly to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and beneath your gums.

These practices limit the amount of plaque that builds up, reducing the risk of ongoing inflammation.

Many people also benefit from using an antimicrobial mouthwash, such as LISTERINE®. Antimicrobial mouthwash helps kill the bacteria responsible for gum disease and lowers the risk of infection.

Tip #2: Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings

Practicing good dental hygiene at home can help lower your risk of gum disease. However, it isn’t enough to prevent plaque buildup altogether. Even the best brushing and flossing routine can’t remove tartar from hard-to-reach areas.

That’s where preventive dentistry comes in. Make an appointment with your general dentist every six months for an oral exam and professional cleaning. This helps reduce plaque buildup and makes it easier to catch gum disease early.

Tip #3: Adopt a gum-friendly diet and lifestyle

Sugary foods and beverages feed the bacteria responsible for gum disease. You don’t have to eliminate these treats from your diet completely. However, cutting back can help support your gum health.

Similarly, it’s important to eat a nutritious diet. Fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in vitamin C and calcium, can lower inflammation, maintain the health of your gums, and strengthen your jawbones.

Your lifestyle also plays an important role. Quitting tobacco and cutting back on alcohol can lower your risk of gum disease and make it easier for your mouth to heal if there’s an infection.

Tip #4: Learn how to recognize early signs of gum disease

Gum disease develops slowly, but there are early warning signs you can watch for. These include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth
